Hazelnuts have been cultivated by man since ancient times. Rich in vitamins and a source of phytosterols, a substance believed to be important for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, hazelnuts contain monounsaturated fats, capable of lowering the level of cholesterol and triglycerides. The Piedmont hazelnut or “Tonda Gentile Trilobata” is one of the most prized. Greenish in colour, when ripe it turns light brown.

Our hazelnuts undergo a complex procedure of transformation: once harvested in August, they are then manually selected and cleaned, before being shelled and roasted. This is to ensure the best quality of the final product. Following, our hazelnuts are packed in vacuum-sealed bags in order to preserve the aromatic fullness and fragrance. Try Gerlotto’s hazelnuts either as a quick snack or while sipping a glass of Metodo Classico. In the kitchen (whole or ground as “granella”), the T.G.T. hazelnut stands out for its versatility: excellent with both the traditional preparations such as “Panna cotta, “Hazelnut cake”, “Brutti & Buoni”, “Baci di Dama” or innovative interpretations, like muffins or brownies. Noteworthy too when used to prepare savoury dishes: sauced roasts, soft or strong cheese mousse and anchovy fillets.

All of our hazelnuts belong to plantations owned by our family, and all the steps of the preparation are totally carried out within our farm.

Azienda Agricola Gerlotto

At the beginning of the twentieth century, our grandfather, Bartholomew Gerlotto, in addition to to his cattle-breeding business, started to plant his first vines at our farm. During the sixties, it was our father, Mario Gerlotto, who succeeded in expanding the business by purchasing several other acres of land, and by starting to vinify our grapes. He also added cultivating hazelnut trees to the regular activities of the farm. In 2001, we, the third generation of Gerlotto family, after building the first section of the new cellar, came eventually to the important decision of bottling part of our wine production and selling the top-quality selection of our wines: D.O.C.G. or D.O.C. Barolo, Nebbiolo d’Alba, Dolcetto di Diano d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba superiore, Langhe Arneis and recently the Méthode Champenoise and Nebbiolo to the local market (private customers, restaurants and retail). At the same time, we began to develop and expand our hazelnut farming, which has led us to producing whole or ground roasted hazelnuts, hazelnut paste, and “Nocciociock” (hazelnut + cocoa) cream spread. Today our farm cultivates and runs 15 hectares of vineyard and 11 hectares of hazelnut trees. The official name of our winery is “Azienda Agricola Fratelli Gerlotto di Paolo e Davide Gerlotto”: formally, Gerlotto Winery and is a “Società semplice agricola” , translated into English, a classic farm.
